Ceramic materials are brittle and therefore, they are sensitive to shock. Nevertheless, they are used in the field of armor protection. On their own, ceramic materials will offer only limited ballistic protection. In composite systems however, their advantages become evident. Particularly for body armour and vehicle protection ceramic materials have widely succeeded in replacing steel plates which had previously been used.
